Ascampaignersforeducationreformwerecognisethatdifferentideasandmodelsareemerging.Wewelcomeanysignificantsteptowardsbringingourchildrencloserto-gether.Howeverwemuststrivetoensurethatwedonotstopuntilwereachthegoal.Thepublicwillisforevenmoreambitiousmeasureswedonotsimplywanttomanagedivisionbetter.Wecannotbesatisfiedbyoccasionalcontactbetweenchildrenfromdifferentschoolswhichcouldmerelyunderlinethedifferences.Howeverthetideisturningstepsarebeingtakennotfastenoughperhaps.BUTLITTLEBYLITTLEOURACTIONSENCOURAGEDBYOURFRIENDSAROUNDTHEWORLDCANCHANGECOMMUNITIESANDCANALSOEFFECTCHANGEPOLITICALLY.Inrecentyearsourworkonthegroundhasincludedexpandingexistingintegratedschoolsinresponsetodemand.NorthernIrelandhasexperiencedasignificantdemographicdownturninschoolagechildrenformanyyearsandputsimplywehavetoomanyschoolswithtoomanyemptydesks.Howeverbuckingthistrendwehavemanyintegratedschoolswhocouldenrollmorechildrenifonlytheyhadtheadditionalclassroomsinwhichtohousethepupils.ThisyearalonesevenintegratedschoolshaveappliedtoexpandandinmanycasesadditionalfundingforaccommodationwouldhelpunlockpublicfundingfromtheDepartmentofEducationfortherecurrentcosts.Weshouldneverforgethowsuchinvestmentimpactsonthelivesofchildren.Beyondthepupilsthesedevelopmentsmakearealdifferencetocommunitiesinareaswhereitismostneeded.NorthernIrelandisanexampleofhowcon-flictcanbetransformedintopeacebutalsoareminderthatweareundergoingaprocessnotexperiencinganevent.Peopleatgrassrootshaveworkedwithcourageandfaithtocreatewhatwehaveandwecouldnthavedonethatwithoutyoursupport.THANKYOUFORHELPINGUSTOKEEPINTEGRATEDEDUCATIONMOVINGFORWARDSANDFORHELPINGTOBUILDABETTERFUTUREFORALLOURCHILDREN.TheIrelandFundshavebeenlong-standingandloyalsupportersofintegratededucationinNorthernIrelandsince1981andtheopeningoftheveryfirstintegratedschoolLaganCollege.Thentherewerejust28pupils.Todaythatfigurestandsat22000childrenofallfaithsandnoneandfromrightacrossthetraditionaldividelearninggrowingandplayingtogetherin62schoolsspreadacrossNorthernIreland.Oneimportantresultofourinternationalsupportisthatintegratededucationhasdevelopedtothestagewhereitchallengestheverynatureoftheeducationsystemitself.WelivewithasystemwhicheffectivelyseparateschildrenfromtheageofthreeaccordingtotheirreligiousorcommunitybackgroundasystemwhichhasprevailedinNorthernIrelandforalmostacentury.Howeverinthelast32yearsintegratedschoolshaveshownthatchildrencanbeeducatedtogetherinawaywhichdoesntdiluteachildsreligionoridentityandwhichencouragesrespectandunderstanding.RecentvisitsbyUSPresidentsBritishPrimeMinistersIrishTnaistesandotherleadershavehighlightedthesig-nificantworkofintegratedschoolssettingthembeforetheinternationalcommunityasanexampleofthewayforward.AndathomeinNorthernIrelandweareseeingagrowingdebateabouthoweducationandschoolscancontributepositivelytothenewsharedfuturewewishforourpost-conflictsociety.FirstMinisterPeterRobinsonoftheDemocraticUnionistPartydescribedtheeducationsystemasabenignformofapartheidwhilsttheEducationMinisterJohnODowdofSinnFeinrecentlyacknowl-edgedthatseparationbyreligionisbadforsociety.Publicopinionpollresultsalsoshowthatcitizensarefirmlyinfavouroftheideaofchildrenbeingeducatedtogether.OverthelastfewyearstheIntegratedEducationFundhasworkedhardonatwinstrategyofcontinuingtosupportschoolsparentsandpupilsonthegroundwhilstalsoencouraginglocaldecisionmakerstoreformthesystemsothatschoolsfosterintegrationratherthanseparation.Iencourageeveryonetoseeintegrationasaddedvalueandnotsomethingtofear.33connect2014BaronessMayBlood
